Interpret is a new design studio founded by Dan Trobak, a communications designer with over 20 years of experience in the Canadian design industry. Interpret was launched to combine our passion for good design with our love of the great outdoors. We have a deep desire to do meaningful work that helps to educate people and protect our natural environment.
Our clients include BC Parks, BC Parks Foundation and the Forest Stewardship Council.
We create modern interpretive signs that enrich the experience of visitors to parks, trails, historic sites, cultural sites, and other outdoor destinations. Well written and professionally designed signs that connect with visitors to inspire positive change.
Our design process combines the traditional study of Interpretive Design with modern materials and digital fabrication. 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC cutting can help create engaging and long lasting signs. Material choice can reduce the environmental impacts of signs and increase viewer interest. We believe that good signs don’t always have to be just a panel on a post.
We can assemble a creative and agile team according to the needs of each specific project. We collaborate with qualified interpretive writers and planners, exhibit designers, graphic designers, illustrators, 3D designers, interactive designers, and digital fabricators.
Interpret design is based in the tiny mountain town of Kaslo, British Columbia.
Hello. I am a communications designer who has been running a successful design studio from the tiny mountain town of Kaslo, BC for the past decade. Interpret Design is the result of my desire to bring together my background in communication and design with my love of the great outdoors.
I grew up on a small farm in Saskatchewan and went on to study Visual Communications at Medicine Hat College in Alberta. The Visual Communications program combines the fine arts with graphic design, digital arts and new media. The entire creative and technical process is studied, from concept through production.
I have continued my education through constant reading and online courses.
I have had the opportunity to work with many great clients across Canada on projects that promote the outdoors and natural environment.
During my past twenty years in the design industry I have worked both as an in-house and remote designer. Working remotely and running my own business has given me the strong project management and communication skills needed to take a job from conception to completion, on budget and on time.
Along with the research, writing and design side of projects, I am an experienced sign fabricator. Experienced in print production and signage manufacturing as well as digital fabrication and 3D design, using tools such as CNC routers, laser cutters and 3D printers.
I am an expert user of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. I have always been a multidisciplinary designer who is equally at home working in both print design and interactive media. Other skills include photography, illustration, video and motion graphics.
